The kitchen is the lifeblood of your home. Not only is it vital to everyday life, but a hangout spot that the family automatically gravitates to at any time of the day. If you love entertaining guests or having family sit-downs every night, the kitchen’s design, look, and feel can be just as important as its cooking capabilities. There are many reasons to renovate this space, but one aspect often gets overlooked when compared to cabinets, countertops, and appliances: the kitchen walls. Kitchen wall space is often taken up by cabinets and can be at a premium, so finding ways to dress it up within your limited space restrictions can be a challenge all on its own.

Kitchen Renovations and Designing with Kitchen Walls in Mind

When moving into a new house, there might be a few reasons to embark on a kitchen redesign. Whether the style isn’t to your liking or the layout is not conducive to your large family’s needs, it is sometimes necessary to start from scratch. Whether or not you completely renovate your kitchen changes how much you can plan your wall art and decorations with it. Finding something that works with your current kitchen design can be more challenging than starting from a blank slate, but it is not impossible.

Wall Art- While it may seem strange to hang up art on your kitchen walls as opposed to a living room or bedroom, there is no design law that says you can’t utilize this standard wall decoration tip in your kitchen as well. Paintings or photographs can make a striking visual impact in a small amount of space and go a long way in bringing a personal touch into an otherwise bland or primarily functional kitchen. Depending on your available wall space, you can have large designs that tell a story or smaller, more intimate pieces that add touches of flare where needed.

Kitchens are also a great place to hang tributes to lost loved ones, especially if they were a force to be reckoned with in the kitchen. Passing down family recipes to your children that you learned from parents, aunts, uncles, or grandparents can be even more special when you can look up at a family photo of the one who taught you. Options and inspiration are endless, and we recommend researching online to see what types of art others have used in their kitchens that could also be a good fit for yours.

Unique Wall Additions – If art is not your style, there are many other possibilities you can work into your design. Hanging plants and herbs on the wall in small planters can bring a natural feel into the kitchen, especially if you can prove to guests the freshness of your ingredients by breaking off fresh sprigs for your dishes. You can also install smaller shelves to hold these herbs or anything else that works well in a design. This can include a space to store homemade pickled or fermented goods, additional dishes, and other knickknacks to spice up the wall. Hanging up antique pots and pans or utilizing long, vine-producing plants are also options, adding a flare to your kitchen that doesn’t take away from any counter space needed to keep your kitchen functional and efficient.

No matter what you choose, your kitchen will look and feel better if you take the first step and experiment with designs instead of leaving the wall space blank. You can also create the kitchen of your dreams by installing new cabinetry, countertops, and appliances.
