Especially after the last couple of years, hosting friends or family at your home is an event to be enjoyed. Because these visits sometimes happen unexpectedly, you may rush to prepare your guest bathroom for their arrival. Instead, let’s take a look at designing and maintaining your space with guests in mind from the beginning.  Here are some ways to install a guest-friendly bathroom at your home.

Reduce the Grime: Arriving after a long drive to a grimy bathroom isn’t ideal. While it’s likely your guest bathroom receives less attention than your master bathroom or a commonly-used half bath in the hallway, you still need to make sure it stays clean. Mold, mildew, and grout grime can be difficult to eliminate completely even with hours of cleaning. If you find yourself struggling to keep up, perhaps it is time for a small renovation. You can replace old grout, tile, and showers with new ones made of low-maintenance materials (i.e. natural stone, glass, or polished porcelain tiles). you can also choose larger tile sizes that decrease the amount of grout you have to clean. Acrylic and fiberglass showers have smooth walls so that you don’t have to worry about scrubbing your shower walls as closely as you do the floors.

Double-check the Locks: Walking in on someone using the bathroom is nearly as embarrassing as being walked-in on. You probably don’t use the locks that often in your house; however, your guests certainly do. Before they arrive, check the locks to make sure that they work and don’t get stuck. This gives them the privacy they deserve and prevents some awkward moments during their stay.

Stock the Cabinets and Shelves: We’ve all been there. It’s no fun being in an unfamiliar home, locked in the bathroom, and running out of toilet paper. Make sure the paper products are fully stocked to accommodate the entirety of your guest’s stay. It’s also smart to provide extra towels, an extra box of tissues, and extra soap.

Hotel a la You! To bring your host skills to the next level, provide any essentials your visitors could need in their guest-friendly bathroom. Store spare toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and deodorant in the cabinet so that they can replace any item that has been forgotten, lost, or broken without having to ask. Keeping an amenity basket with wipes, lotion, menstrual products, Band-Aids, and Q tips gives your guests access to products they may need at a moment’s notice. To prevent any shame, keep a plunger, toilet brush, and air freshener in the bathroom so that they don’t have to ask on the occasion that the toilet gets clogged.

Out with the Old: If you’ve never done any bathroom remodeling, it may be time to consider it. Oftentimes replacing a crusty old shower or faucet is worth the cost when you don’t have to spend the time and mental energy it takes to scrub old features. Take a few minutes to stand in your bathroom and see it as your guests might. Note areas you feel could use improvement, and consult a contractor to see what minor improvements could be made to freshen up the space and make it easier to maintain and dazzle.

Maintaining a beautiful guest-friendly bathroom is a great way to be ready for any guests who may arrive. While it seems like a minor room, giving this room your attention will go a long way to making your guests feel welcome.
