There is hardly a more utilitarian room in the house than the bathroom, but it is also a space homeowners love to renovate. From urban contemporary to country chic, a bathroom redesign can completely transform the look and feel of your home. Fixtures may not be the first element you think of when designing a new bathroom, but they can make a dramatic impact on the overall look and feel of the room.

The 2020 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show took place in Las Vegas last January, just before everything changed. Here are some of the fixtures trends which were presented at the show which we think will make interesting additions to your bathroom design going forward.

Customization and personalization were two of the biggest buzzwords at the show this year, and mix-and-match finishes, elements and designs are a hot trend.. Rather than a uniform and sterile design approach, these themes allow homeowners to look at the aesthetics of their bathroom in a creative and flexible manner. In other words, design trends are leaning toward a far more personal and fluid design process.

For example, finishes such as polished chrome, satin nickel and matte black are among the most popular for the most contemporary bathroom designs, but homeowners need not choose only one. Some manufacturers of bathroom fixtures allow for different finishes on the same fixture, such as the ribbon spout and outer ring of  a faucet handle can be one finish and the handle’s inner accent piece can be another. With some design lines offering up to 17 different finishes, the possibilities are nearly endless as to how you can customize, mix and match for your own taste.

Manufacturers such as Kohler are playing with faucet handles, creating different geometric shapes and unexpected materials such as white and black marble. They have also introduced a new line of bathtubs which can be placed flush against a wall or stand alone in the middle of the floor. Another strong trend is that light fixtures are finally being created to match with faucets, showerheads and other hardware. Many lines of light fixtures, ranging from transitional and classic sconces, pendants, flush-mount fixtures and chandeliers, were debuted, allowing for design compatibility with not only fixtures but sinks and tubs.

Vanities are also getting a design upgrade, primarily consisting of unexpected configurations. These new vanities can be designed as separate single-sink vanities, combined with a storage to create a double-vanity look, and installed wither as a wall-mount or freestanding element.  Vanities with “legs” may present the appearance of furniture with storage rather than a traditional sink look.

Shower Fixtures Have Evolved

Perhaps the most interesting design trends involve our shower experience, which has evolved over the last few years with features such as steam fixtures, dual shower heads, waterproof speakers and more. But design experts are not done with shower innovation, it appears.

For instance, the aromatherapy hand shower allows the homeowner to insert capsules filled with essential oils – such as lavender or vanilla –  to infuse the spray with a desired scent. The device allows you to increase or decrease the amount of water running through the capsule in order to moderate the level of dilution and scent. Experts shared that as warm water dilates the pores, the benefits of the essential oils are delivered both on the skin and through the olfactory system. These scent capsules are promoted as not leaving any scent or residue on the skin, hair, or bathroom fixtures.

Another highlight of the show were new sprays which conserve water while providing a quality shower experience.  New atomization technology, for instance, splits the shower spray into even tinier droplets so there’s more coverage using less water. Air-induction technology, in contrast, creates large droplets while conserving water – utilizing 30% less than the federal standard.

The above are only a few of the innovations we are seeing in bathroom design, and really your new bathroom aesthetic is up to your own imagination. At West Coast Design Build Florida, we will work with you and our design team to create the modern bathroom you envision, using all the newest technologies and trends.
