The type of cabinet you pick defines your kitchen – from an elegant, sleek kitchen of the future to a traditional and country-style space. Much more than just being functional, cabinets take up a lot of real estate in your kitchen and are often the first place guests have their eyes drawn to when they come over to visit. Have you been inspired lately to change up your kitchen cabinet design or finally upgrade those basic cabinets that do nothing for your personal style? In this article, we discuss some popular cabinet designs, what styles they work well with, and how you can incorporate them into the kitchen design of your dreams.

Kitchen Cabinet Design Choices

Glass Panel Cabinets
Glass panel cabinets are the perfect way to create a sense of elegance in your kitchen, especially if you have a large variety of china, dishes, and silverware that deserves to be displayed. While the idea of proudly displaying the contents of your messy and disorganized cabinets might seem distressing, it creates an added incentive to keep your kitchen clean and organized at all times. Glass panel cabinets, however, are most often used in conjunction with another type of cabinet, only using glass in certain areas to draw attention. Another common design choice is to use glass cabinets above and a wood-style cabinet below, relegating your overflow and kitchen supplies down where they can’t be viewed. Regardless of how much glass you use, they undoubtedly provide a unique look and require only minimal amounts of upkeep outside of the occasional cleaning.

Shaker Cabinets
Shaker cabinets are a classic design found in many homes that, while not complicated, elevates a basic cabinet to the next level. Shaker cabinets consist of 4 raised edges and a recessed panel in the center. Because of their ubiquity, these cabinets come in all shapes, sizes, and colors and can work well in nearly any type of kitchen cabinet design. As stated previously, glass panels rarely work well on their own; pairing them with dark-colored shaker cabinets to provide a striking contrast is simple but effective at elevating your kitchen above what it once was.

Flat Panel Cabinets
Flat Panel cabinets are deceptively simple designs that can create a modern look in any kitchen if utilized well. Sometimes referred to as slab panels, these cabinets are often installed flush with appliances, with only minimal extrusions for handholds and handles. Depending on the panels’ material, flat panel cabinets lining a wall can create a modern, futuristic look or a traditional and rustic feel.

Pantry Cabinets

Pantry cabinets can take the look of a wide variety of other cabinets – these focus more on what’s on the inside. Pantry cabinets swing open to reveal additional shelving lining the inside of the panels that recess into the cabinet space when closed, providing extra room for storage in an enclosed kitchen. Pantry cabinets can be used for general use or to help promote easier cooking. Installing a pantry cabinet that you stock full of spices, oils, and other everyday ingredients helps keep all of your essential cooking foods as close to the action as possible.
