The bathroom is one of the dirtiest  – and germiest – rooms in the house. It might not always be pleasant to think about, but many nasty germs can linger in your bathroom’s often damp and warm conditions. Maintaining a clean bathroom is essential not only for aesthetics but the overall health of your family. These days, we are all aware of the necessity to keep our homes as germ-free as possible.

Maybe you just designed the bathroom of your dreams and want to keep it clean from the get-go. Or maybe your old bathroom is showing its age, and you want to ensure it’s safe. Either way, these tips will help you rid your bathroom of any germs missed by your routine cleaning.

General Cleanliness: Before cleaning any surfaces, you should look at what is in your bathroom. This study from 2015  found that most toothbrushes harbored an outrageous amount of bacteria and recommended that you often clean and disinfect your brush. At the very least, replacing your old toothbrush with a new model at a regular rate will keep you healthy and reduce the overall germ vectors found in your bathroom.

Anything you leave sitting out on your bathroom counter should be cleaned or replaced if not addressed for an extended period. Toothbrush holders, hairbrushes, you name it; all have been exposed to fecal matter circulating in the air after someone in your family flushes the toilet. Leaving these dirty items on top of a clean and shiny countertop will quickly return it to uncleanliness.

Shower:  Showers and bathtubs can get surprisingly dirty, especially if your drain and pipes do not allow the water to drain fully from the tub after use. When your tub fails to drain, particulates or dirt will accumulate inside the tub around the rim. A clogged drain is common in showers due to large buildups of hair, which can be hard to remove. To fully clean your shower, you should first use a drain cleaner to completely clear any blocked pipes. Next, the entire surface of the tub, walls, and floor should be covered with a material-safe cleaner and left to soak. After about 15 minutes, take scrubbers or sponges and clean every inch of your shower area.

Your shower curtains or doors also need to be cleaned. If your bathroom features a beautiful glass shower door, you want to use an all-purpose glass cleaner to avoid ruining or scratching the glass. For shower curtains, especially the side exposed to running water, cleaning is possible through a scrub with baking soda or a run through the washing machine.

Sink: Your sink should be scrubbed with an all-purpose cleaning agent everywhere, including the faucet and handles. If you immediately touch a dirty faucet handle, there is no point in washing your hands. The process of cleaning your sink is a simple but effective way to cut down on bacteria and germ spread in your bathroom.

Toilet: Your toilet is, unsurprisingly, rather dirty. Pour toilet bowl cleaner into the bowl, and proceed to wipe down the rest of the outer areas while the bowl cleaner is beginning to break down and kill germs. A stiff and robust toilet brush is vital for breaking up any solid marks or stains and returning your bowl to a beautiful shining white.

Other Areas: Think about other parts of your bathroom that might contain germs through contact with your hands or germs percolating in the air. Light fixtures, light switches, cabinet handles, and towel holders are all parts of your bathroom that should receive a cleaning once in a while to maintain a high standard of cleanliness for your family.

Maintaining a clean bathroom will directly boost your and your family’s health. But sometimes, all the cleaning in the world won’t bring your bathroom up to par. It may be time for a renovation.
