What Makes A Bathroom Kid-Friendly?

Kid-friendly bathrooms are best described as bathrooms that include practical benefits or modular options that assist with potty training and bathroom routines or help keep kids safe. In a master bathroom, you may opt for an expensive, eye-catching countertop that brings the room together. However, that same countertop could very quickly be ruined by toothpaste stains from toddlers eager to brush their teeth as quickly as possible. Kid-friendly bathrooms sacrifice certain design elements but gain functionality, safety, and practical use.

Tip #1 – Non-Slip Surfaces

Unfortunately, a common injury for young kids is slipping and falling on a wet tiled floor. A fantastic option for a kid-friendly bathroom is non-slip porcelain tiles that provide stability even when wet. Furthermore, tubs and showers should include non-slip mats that help your kids stay balanced as they learn to bathe and shower independently. Any surfaces that a mat or similar material will broadly cover have less of a necessity for expensive materials or fancy design, letting you put that money towards other aspects of the bathroom build.

Tip #2 – Install Adjustable and Retractable Devices

Young kids need certain assistance in the bathroom, but these will no longer be necessary as time goes on. Most commonly, young kids need help being potty trained and also require assistance reaching up to the counter.

For potty training, toilets can be installed with a second, smaller seating area that can simply be removed once the child comes of age and no longer requires it.

To help children reach up to the counter, most households utilize a stepstool. Despite its relative simplicity, there are still risks involved. Even if your bathroom floor has non-slip material, you risk having your child lose their footing or kick out the stool underneath them and fall hard on the floor. An innovative solution is to install a retractable step into the bottom drawer of a vanity which can be swapped out for regular storage later on down the line.

Tip #3 – Plan For The Future With Storage

If your family is evergrowing, it is easy to end up with way too many toys and items. In the bathroom, to facilitate more effortless bath routines, having organized and plentiful storage is a must. Items involved with a kid’s bath take up a lot of space, but you can minimize the space they take up by dedicating a storage box or bin to hold all of their items. This keeps the bathroom from looking cluttered with dozens of items strewn about and prevents your young kids from haphazardly grabbing and moving all of their things into random corners of the room, never to be seen again.
