Some features and styles are timeless and generally pleasing to most people. They’re a great way to get some guaranteed return on investment when it comes time to sell. However, there are others that tend to be hit-or-miss when it comes to user preference. What do you think? Do you love these bathroom design features – or hate them?

Double Sinks in the Bathroom: In a crowded household, double sinks can be invaluable. The extra space can give you room to have all your toiletries out without the counter seeming too cluttered. They can also help cut down on the amount of time it takes for everyone to get ready in the morning. However, in a house with multiple bathrooms, a double sink can seem like it is taking up unnecessary space. Extended counters and twice the number of sinks means that there is twice the amount of cleaning to be done, and homeowners who are single or just two people may find that they would prefer a smaller bathroom and more space in the adjacent room.

Patterned Floor Tiles: It is great when you truly love every room in your house and feel at peace there. Adding a touch of your personal style everywhere makes it unmistakably yours. However, you should consider the type of personal touches you add carefully. A bold color on the wall can easily be covered with a more neutral one when selling to appeal to most buyers; however, features such as tiling on a wall or floor are expensive to install and replace. Patterned floor tiles have come in and out of fashion; they make some people fall in love while others look at them with distaste. If you anticipate selling your home at some point in the next few years, consider filling your desire for patterned floors with bath mats or rugs and opt for a more neutral-style tile.

Clear Glass Shower Walls: Some people admire a sleek appearance and modern style of glass walls in a shower. If you have invested money to tile your shower walls, it makes sense that you’d want to show that off–and what better way than with clear walls! The transparent material is often utilized in smaller bathrooms to make them seem bigger. When you have a solid curtain, you effectively decrease the perceived size of your bathroom by 3 feet. Glass doors open the room up to feel less cramped. However, there is considerable maintenance to keep the glass walls clean. Any drops of soap or hair product that splash onto the walls will cause streaks; even just plain water will dry and create spots. Hair may stick to the walls as well. The material’s transparency leaves nothing hidden, so frequent cleaning is a must. You will need to use a squeegee on the walls after every use, plus a streak-free disinfectant for cleaning. If you really want it to shine, you will need to polish it as well. Many homeowners may like the look but opt for non-glass showers because they simply do not want to deal with the maintenance.

Getting Rid of the Bathtub: Many homeowners are starting to remove the bathtubs in the master bathroom and replace them with a more spacious shower (a great choice when planning to age in place) or install a small shower to create extra walking space in the bathroom. On the other hand, many people love baths as a form of self-care or just prefer a bath-and-shower combo in general. Families with multiple kids may find it easier to have two tubs available when separate baths are necessary. Some homeowners worry that removing the tub will lower the resale value since it can limit the type of potential buyers it attracts.
