Though not as big of a statement piece as a tub or tiling job, the sink can still bring a “wow” factor to your bathroom renovation. There are many materials to choose from when selecting a sink, and you’ll want to find one that fits your personal preference and the style you are going for in the room. Each ranges in its durability and maintenance needs, but all have the potential to make your remodel even more upscale.

Porcelain
There is a reason you find many porcelain sinks in older homes–they are incredibly durable. Most of these sinks are made from clay fired at an extremely high temperature to make it very strong, then coated with porcelain enamel. These sinks are smooth and make cleaning quick and simple, so they remain a popular choice for families or those who do not want to spend a lot of time maintaining their bathroom fixtures. Most porcelain comes in a shade of white, but there are options for more colorful porcelain sinks if you’d like it to add a pop of fun color to the room. Keep in mind that porcelain can stain over time if a substance is left on it for long enough.

Ceramic
Ceramic is another fired material that is highly durable and resistant to chipping or scratches. Like porcelain, white is the most common color, but many ceramic sinks are made with beautiful patterns and designs -or are stained in other solid colors like black or navy. The ceramic is fully sealed so that cleaning is effortless and water cannot penetrate it.

Stainless Steel
Though you see stainless steel more often in kitchen sinks, it is also a viable choice for your bathroom. The steel is excellent for preventing bacteria growth–a benefit for a fixture where you are constantly dealing with bathroom germs. Its metallic shine complements a contemporary industrial-style design and can help make a small bathroom appear bigger by reflecting light. Though easy to clean, stainless steel does require some maintenance to prevent streaking, and it is prone to scratches. If you enjoy the metal appearance, but the silver color of stainless steel doesn’t suit your preferences, you can also opt for a copper or bronze sink.

Stone
Few sink materials are as unique as stone since each piece is individually carved and crafted. You can go black with an onyx sink, or opt for a grey or white marble. Travertine or sandstone provides a more textured appearance. Stone is a beautiful way to incorporate natural elements into your bathroom in a chic way. It’s not the easiest material to maintain, though. Stone is porous, so the sink will regularly need to be re-sealed to prevent water intrusion and bacteria growth. Deposits including soap, salt, and other minerals found in hard water can significantly affect the sink’s surface if not adequately wiped away.

Glass
Tempered glass can be found in any color and in a wide variety of patterns, and a countertop sink like this is sure to be stunning in any bathroom. Clear glass is a good option for a small bathroom since its transparency gives the appearance of taking up less space. Almost any cleanser will work to keep the glass germ- and streak-free.
