Top 2022 Construction Design Trends

Construction design is constantly changing, and as consumers evolve, so does the look of their homes. While we can always expect the mainstream to embrace a traditional basic floorplan – meaning that homeowners will always need kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms – the way these concepts are brought to life can vary greatly from era to era. A 1970’s kitchen, for instance, was typically closed in and closed off from the living areas and dining room – and now, those layouts are likely to be knocked down to create a more open space. Bathrooms used to be primarily practical but now often resemble a spa, a haven for self-care and relaxation. Human requirements remain constant, but construction design trends are constantly changing.

With that in mind, let’s look at some of the newer trends that new home construction builders are embracing in 2022.

1. More Windows, Hold the Coverings: Windows are becoming even more popular, especially when the home lot affords necessary privacy. Floor-to-ceiling windows, aquarium glass, and entire glass walls are all increasingly desired, allowing for tons of natural light and a sense of bringing the outdoors in. Even those who don’t have inherent privacy are still opting for windows with no coverings in many common areas of the home. For those who want the best of both worlds, disappearing rollup shades are a great way to allow ample sunlight throughout the day but privacy at night. Florida homeowners should note that these types of windows should be UV-protected to prevent fading carpet and furniture over the years.
2. Plants, Plants, Plants: While not a construction design trend per se, green plants, and tropical flowers are all the rage – inside and out. Homeowners should take advantage of all those beautiful windows to fill their homes with air-purifying, oxygen-producing, lush green plants.
3. Pet Accommodations: Pets have always been special, but it seems they have become more a part of the family than ever in recent years. Construction design trends have expanded to include Fluffy and Fido by incorporating pet “mud rooms” to clean them off after a dusty and sweaty walk; doggie level water spigots over sloped tile floors and drains, and even custom-built kennels and crates nestled into the walls for ultimate space efficiency.
4. Curvy Edges: In 2022, designers are experimenting with softening the hard edges and corners of kitchen countertops and drawers, creating a flowing and “curvy look to the space. Kidney-bean-shaped kitchen islands and custom task lighting make more elegant and luxurious rooms than the usual square aesthetic and evoke a restaurant-style feel.
5. Inspired Kitchen Storage Space: Not everyone can afford to upgrade to a full gourmet kitchen with cabinets galore – but that doesn’t mean you can’t find creative ways to augment storage space. When replacing or renovating kitchen cabinets, utilize sliding-out shelves in deep cabinets and drawers, or incorporate lazy-susan designs to use corner spaces. You’ll never have to dig to the back of your cabinet to find the pasta pot again. (Don’t forget to update your bathroom storage as well!) 
6. Designer Pantries and Laundry Rooms: Construction design trends are elevating these “secondary spaces” into highly functional and beautiful areas of the home. With elegant cabinetry replacing wire shelving and custom drawers, these traditionally “catch-all and shut the door” areas can become showplaces you can be proud of – while adding great storage.
